Improving Bearings Performance and Life

Bearings form an essential part of not only machines used for the production of machinery, but also for numerous domestic appliances. The latest developments in the field of design of bearings have facilitated many manufacturing processes, while bringing down not just the cost of various industrial and domestic products, but also enhancing their life.

When you want to reduce the downtime of any equipment, you need to draw and follow a plan for its maintenance. Maintenance costs time, and one has to find ways to reduce that time, commonly known as shut down time, during which the production comes to a halt. It requires identifying the weak links of a given system, which comprises of a series of parts like gears, shafts, bearings, seals and their lubrication etc. It is the design and functioning of the improved or tailor-made tapered roller bearings, CBN ground gears, aluminum or high potency housings, profiled gear teeth and manmade lubricant that generally make a substantial difference, in order to derive the most from a system transmitting power.

An important part of a good maintenance plan is improving the quality of service. In case of bearings, this objective is achieved by keeping fatigue damage at its minimum level in its three basic modes consisting of:

Inclusions - Cracks caused by fatigue would start appearing beneath the surface of the raceway as a result of non-metallic micro impurities.
Geometric Stress - This kind of stress causes damage in a localized high stress area, on the edges of the raceway because of misalignment and high rolling loads.
Point Surface Origin - Damage in this case starts off at a local, high-stress point over the surface of the raceway. Most often, the cause is an inadequate thickness of the lubricating film that separates the surfaces of a bearing.

Different levels of improved life of bearings can be achieved. Usually, an improved bearing should have at least one and a half time the life of a normal bearing. However, it is not unusual to enhance the performance by four to five times, depending on the operating circumstances. To assess the level by which the improvement of a bearing can be made, the designer needs to take into consideration the various design options available without overlooking the environmental factors under which it is going to be used. Bearing manufacturers may make use of sophisticated software to precisely compute these effects.
